GSTIN is the GST identification number. A GSTIN is a 15-digit PAN-based unique identification number allotted to every registered person under GST. GST Identification Number Format

7: In case of serious offences of fraud by misuse of GSTIN, in such a manner that the amount of tax involved is up to Rs. 50 lakhs, then the offender has to serve a jail term of 1 year plus a penalty. When the amount ranges between Rs. 50 lakhs to 100 lakhs, then jail term shall be three years plus a penalty, while in cases where the amount exceeds Rs. 1 Crore, then jail term shall be up to 5 years plus a penalty.

Each GST registered taxpayer has their own unique 15 character GST identification number (GSTIN). GSTIN's are alphanumeric numbers that are used for identifying businesses and tracking tax payments as well as monitoring compliance with the GST in India.
GSTIN's are composed of segments that identify the various attributes of the business entity being registered with the GST.
An example of a GSTIN would be 27ABCDE1234F1Z5
In the above example, the first two digits indicate the state code of the registered location. I.e., a GSTIN starting with "27" indicates the business is located in Maharashtra, whereas each of the other Indian states and union territories have their assigned GSTIN state code.
The next ten digits are used to store the Permanent Account Number (PAN) of the taxpayer. The PAN of a business entity is used to link the GST registration to the income tax records for the business entity.
The 13th digit indicates the number of GST registrations that a business entity has in the state where it has registered its first GSTIN and can be a letter or number, depending on how many GST numbers the business has in that state.
The 14th digit is typically the letter "Z," which has been set aside for use in the future, and the 15th digit is used as a checksum to identify errors.
When businesses and consumers understand the structure of the GSTIN, it helps them to identify legitimate GST registrations and identify incorrect or suspicious GST registrations.
You can use the official GST Portal to check the GST registration status of an individual or business using their Permanent Account Number (PAN). If you want confirmation if they are registered for the GST with their PAN details, this is a good way to do that.
You can check the GST registration status using your PAN by going to the GST portal and selecting the search by PAN option. Once you enter in the PAN and the verification details, you will then have access to all of the GST registrations attached to that PAN in different states. When you search using the PAN, you will get results showing the PID numer and registration number, including the business’ name, the status of the registration, and the state where the business is registered. It is mandatory to submit Form GST REG-01 along with the required documents either online/offline. After an officer performs verification, GSTIN will be allocated to you.
